It seems that these days, a lot of people have been going on talking about the metaverse. You might’ve even heard about how well it is advancing with technology and that it’s going to make the next breakthrough, thanks to its marketing strategy. Although it seems like the cat’s already out of the bag, how does one possibly answer when questioned what it means? Let’s find that out.
What exactly is the Metaverse?
Though many of us agree that the internet is the best possible thing that we humans have created, there is one possible drawback- it can be debated. It isn’t always interactive like we want it to be. Rather than just browsing on your screen, wouldn’t it be cooler to enter it?
And that’s where the metaverse comes into the picture which in other terms, is a virtual reality space where users can interact, game, and exchange digital assets in a computer-generated environment.
Although it was Neal Stephenson who coined the word “metaverse”, Facebook’s chief executive Mark Zuckerberg popularised the term by renaming his trillion-dollar company “Meta”.
Back in the day, the concept of being able to interact in a virtual world wasn’t exactly new. We thought it would be possible to have face-to-face conversations with people through the internet and here we are, doing exactly that. As interesting as it may seem, Meta doesn’t exactly have complete dominance over the Metaverse. Nevertheless, it is still trying.
Google shows about 8,66,00,000 results for searches related to the Metaverse. There are more than 500 tweets on Twitter trending per hour, not to mention more than 43k posts using #Metaverse.
Brands like Nike, Gucci, Disney, Snapchat, and Facebook are in the midst of creating assets, fashion, art, and new samples of experiences in the virtual world with a new economy, currency, and environment.
Though the Metaverse isn’t exactly virtual reality, for the time being, it sounds like it has a very futuristic vision. Several people spend 8 to 10 hours interacting with their phones living on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, LinkedIn, and Tiktok.
According to Zuckerberg, the Metaverse isn’t a place where we just consume content. It’s more about living in it. It provides more potential for education and better opportunities to people who come from smaller places around the world.
RTFKT sold almost 600 digital shoes worth 3.1 million dollars in just 7 minutes. Anyone who purchases a digital shoe can add it to themselves on their pictures on Instagram. Another example is Lionel Messi who launched his NFTs on the “Messiverse”.
From an investor’s point of view, Metaverse shoots an array of new opportunities to increase the value of tech as well as nontech companies. It is possible that the Metaverse can have its own capital market within the digital world.
Snapchat Metaverse
Snapchat recently released an AR filter, aka an avatar lens that makes you look like a sims character. You can find it on your camera by going to the “scan QR code” option. The app thinks that augmented reality is better to build the Metaverse, thanks to the AR that helps us actually look like ourselves in it.
Instagram Metaverse
Meta is introducing 3D avatars to Instagram stories and direct messages. People can use this to create stickers, feed posts, update Facebook profile pictures, and more. Although this feature is available only for the United States, Mexico and Canada so far, it will soon be available in other countries as well.
LinkedIn Metaverse
Metaverse began as full-service art e-commerce and web design platform. It holds the power of symbolism with no bounds. Those that can harness it to elevate what they stand for will be the ones to cut through and succeed in connecting with their target in new and exciting ways.
In conclusion, the most common idea that the Metaverse holds is for it to be a decentralized platform that is convertible between surfaces. It holds a beacon of hope of what it looks like through better defining. It is bound to take a certain stage despite facing some growing pains along the way.
