Vision, a powerful sense allowing us to witness the wonders of the universe. It is made a possibility because of a special and complex organ, the eye. Where would we be today without the amazing sense of sight? How dark would our lives have been if we couldn’t behold the light of day that showers the planet with each sunrise? So it becomes important for us to know how we can increase eye vision.
We would be strays wandering the plains of darkness in search of one another. It does sound very bleak and pitiful, but what are we doing to this gift? Are we giving our eyes the gratitude they deserve? Are we giving our vision the care it requires? More importantly do we know how to take care of our vision?
Let’s take a glance at how we can improve our vision and how we should take care of our eyes.
1) Watch what you eat – Vitamin A, very important for maintaining healthy eyes, present in foods like carrots help in eye functioning. A few eye disorders like macular degeneration can be prevented by taking foods rich in antioxidants commonly present in eggs, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, carrots and dark green leafy vegetables. Fish oil, we can get obtain them through food or capsules. They are rich in a particular fatty acid called DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) which helps in strengthening of cell membranes in all cells of the body including those in the eye.
2) Rest Your Eyes: I have talked about this in depth in previous article How to relieve eye strain. Our eyes cannot withstand continuous stress and work, they require rest from time to time. The 20-20-20 rule is one of the best ways to give them rest.
3) Sleep Well: We all feel drowsy when we don’t get enough sleepy, we feel like our eyes might close any second. Sleep deprivation can lead to many adverse effects on the eyes, it can cause dry eyes where your eyes feel irritated and feel like they are burning, most commonly we see red eyes when we do not have enough sleep. All these strains can have a negative impact on our eyes and can cause deterioration of vision. We need to have an adequate sleep schedule to give our eyes the care and rest they need every day.
4) Healthy eye habits: Everyone remembers the hygiene habits we were taught as a kid like brushing your teeth, showering, etc. Similarly, we need to have healthy eye habits like reducing your screen time. Looking at any kind of screen for a prolonged duration can result in damage to the eye leading to progressive vision loss. To prevent this, we need to put down our phones and turn off the computers and get some fresh air. Adjust the lights to your comfort as high intensity can burn your retinas, Literally.
Having an ambient lighting in the room gives your eyes good environment. Dim lighting while reading or having the book too close can also decrease the eyes’ ability to adjust to different distances. So, make sure to read or watch at a distance to protect your eyes.
5) Eye-wears: There are whole range of glasses that you can wear, different types for different activities. If you already have glasses, then making sure that it’s of the right power and getting routine check-up along with continuous use can help your power to decrease but will surely help in maintaining the same sight. Those involved in sport activities they need to be equipped with protective Eye-wear to safeguard them from any injury to the eye. Sunglasses are not just a fashion statement, they are meant to serve the purpose of protecting your eyes from blinding light of the burning sun. Once again, protect your retinas from being sizzled.
6) Exercise: A healthy body makes a healthy mind and vice-versa. Similarly, if you keep your body in a healthy state your eyes can also be protected from various diseases that are a result of chronic diseases. You can also do small eye exercises every morning to help ease the tension in the muscles controlling the movement of eyeballs. Eye exercises can be rolling off your eyes, not just in annoyance but also for health. Along with that look up and down with your eyes 10 times to complete your eye workout.

7) No Smoking: Avoid holding a cigarette between your lips to have a good vision not just in terms of eye care but also in life. Smoking can cause various diseases in the human body, staying away from cigarettes is a way of staying from these diseases.
8) Know about your risk: Some eye disease can run in family generations. Knowing about them beforehand can help you take care of your eyes in an additional healthy way in order to save yourself from all the trigger factors and help you keep your vision intact and healthy.
In the end to increase your vision you must be able to protect and in turn your eye vision will also increase. So, the next time you observe a miracle of the world around you with your eyes, know that they need attention and care too. They are a gift to save us from the overwhelming doom of darkness, do not forsake it with ignorance and dismissal.
