On 9-1-2020 Neuralink demonstrated the successful efforts of their teams hard work and they are looking for a variety of excellent individuals to join their mission. Helping bring the Neuralink into full fruition while making it affordable and reliable for anyone who wants one.
Neuralinks wireless brain computer interface can read and write at high-broadband speed. It had the ability to solve important brain and spine problems with a safe and seamless implanted device the size of a large coin laying seamlessly flush with the skull not visible to the human eye. The neuralink currently has 1,024 channels that can read and write on each channel. It has a wireless range of 5-10 meters and connects to the patients cell phone via bluetooth using bidirectional information flow, providing real time control while monitoring brainwaves and translating brain activity in real time. Elon Musk pointed out that almost everyone has neurological problems over time and neuralink can solve these problems, such as memory loss, hearing loss, blindness, paralysis, depression, insomnia, extreme pain, seizures, anxiety, addiction, strokes and brain damage.
The team is currently working on developing a fully automated robot that will perform the entire process from start to finish. Their current robot has successfully performed all the implantations inserting the electrodes into the brain carefully with extreme precision and without any noticeable neural damage or bleeding in the brain. This is due to the robotic precision, as it takes images of the brain to avoid hitting any blood vessels or arteries as it then inserts tiny electrodes on micro fine threads. The patient can walk around right after surgery and can even leave the hospital the same day. The procedure takes under an hour and can be performed without any general anesthesia.
I’m very excited to say that it does work! Neuralink has been performed on live pigs with great success. During the demonstration Elon had his team bring out high energy, happy and healthy pigs to not only show it works in real time but also that it is possible to have multiple nuralink implants. Also the procedure is completely reversible without any distinguishable after effects. Joyce the first pig, did not have a neuralink implant. Gertrude the second pig has a neuralink implanted in her brain that connects to the neurons in her snout. It was fascinating to hear and see the neuro spikes from the 1,024 electrodes implanted in her brain. The implant was working well and easily viewable on a display screen during the live demo as she touched her snout to different items while walking around and eating quite a lot, just as a happy and healthy pig would normally do. Gertrude has had the implant for two months and was completely indistinguishable from the first pig without the implant. Dorothy the third pig used to have an implant. It was safely removed and she was also indistinguishable from the other two pigs Showing that if a patient wanted a neuralink removed for any reason or wanted an upgrade; the process would leave the patient healthy, happy and indistinguishable from the population.
The demonstration of reading brain activity was showing live brain activity in the different regions of the brain, as well as individual neuro-spikes in real time. Included in reading the brain activity was the ability to predict the position of all the joints and limbs, while walking on a treadmill with very high accuracy. It was quite impressive to see. Elon highlighted a few requirements for writing to the brain and stimulating neurons. Such as precise control of the electric field in time and space, using a wide range of currents for different brain regions without any harm to the brain over time. The team was able to analyze different regions of brain stimulation using a two-photon microscopy. Showing in real time the electrodes firing and the neuron bodies responding to the electrode stimulation. One electrode has the ability to influence
1,000 to 10,000 neurons by carefully controlling the electric field. Therefore a patient may have one thousand electrodes implanted that can potentially influence millions of neurons.
Neuralink is working closely with the FDA and received the FDA breakthrough device designation in July. Neuralink is preparing for the first human implantation trials pending required approvals and further safety testing.
Elon Musk stated that “Neuralink will significantly exceed the minimum guidelines for safety, making it as safe as possible. Just like at Tesla, while it is legally possible to ship a one star car. All the cars Tesla makes are five star rated in every category.” I am writing this article as a woman who sixteen years ago had my life altered by multiple spine injuries that have disrupted my life and stolen not only my dreams but also my independence. I am very hopeful that neuralink will not only help me but help countless others who feel the same way.
